The Carter County Soil & Water Conservation Dept hosted an Ag Day for the county’s 2nd graders. At Ag Day, the students learn that the food they eat every day starts on a farm before it ends up in the store for their parents to buy and take home. They also learn about animal habitats and how they can help them from being lost.
The kids rotated through 10 stations. They made butter, played a habitat game, made bird seed pine cones and milked a cow. They also learned about farm equipment, the importance of fruits and vegetables in their diets, how horses can help us and all about chickens and turkeys and what foods we get from them.
The SWCD appreciates and thanks everyone that helps get this activity accomplished for the kids: several folks from the University Extension--master gardeners, 4H leaders and Jennifer Williams, the SWCD Board Secretary and the university’s engagement specialist; Elizabeth Picking, livestock specialist; SWCD board members Allen Gibbs and Bert Pennington, and friends and neighbors of the SWCD staff.
