2017 Summer Internship Opportunity
2017 Summer Internship with Andrew and Buchanan County Soil and Water Conservation Districts
The internship will be 10 weeks long sometime between May 1 and September 1, 2017. The Student can pick 10 weeks with in that time frame. The intern will work 32 hours per week for 10 weeks, (working 2 days a week in each county) with a total of 320 hours. The SWCD will work closely with the college to meet any specifications to receive college credit hours. The pay will be determined by the SWCD boards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The position is designed to provide hands on learning environment to help make career decisions while mentoring with SWCD boards, staff, and conservation partners (NRCS, MDC, FSA, and DNR).
The Students will perform the following duties:
Assist with or perform a wide variety of soil conservation duties such as maintaining accurate field notes, assembling maps and aerial photographs, and other related work.
Assist field office staff with development of conservation plans and implementation of conservation practices.
Learn about surveying and how to set construction stakes for variety of soil and water practice.
Assist in program and conservation planning for a variety of soil and water practices such as terraces, diversions, waterways, farm drainage systems.
Assist in gathering and assembling preliminary data for use in developing and applying basic conservation plans.
Assist with information education for school age children and administrative work.
Work Environment:
This position includes both office and field work. Successful candidates will work as part of a local team as well as independently, be able to traverse rough terrain on foot, spend time outdoors in the summer months, able to work with the public including landowners and customers, work in extreme temperature or inclement weather as required, work around large equipment, and complete work in a timely manner.
Experience and Education Qualifications:
Must be a higher education student attending a college, university, technical school, etc. Students must be in good academic standing, as defined by the institution they are attending, and must meet definition of a student throughout the duration of their internship appointment.
