Poster Contest

Warren County Poster Contest explanationThe Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District goes to schools and presents the theme for the poster contest. The contest is open to all 4th graders in Warren County.

The current theme is "Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper". If you are a home-school student at this grade level and would like to participate, please contact the office to get supplies and information.

Each class receives a first, second and third place ribbon along with prize money of $15-$10-$5. All first place winners go on to compete for the county-wide poster contest winner. The county-wide winner receives a plaque and gets the opportunity to compete against other counties in Missouri at the MASWCD Training Conference in November. Ribbons and prize monies are presented to students at their school.

The poster contest is a nationwide program sponsored by the National Association of Conservation Districts and local soil and water conservation districts in effort to spread the word about conservation to the youth of our counties. Local contest winners advance to compete at the state level with state champions competing for the national championship in the fall.

Soils and Forestry Contest

For many years our district has hosted a Soils and Forestry Contest at the Ed Hambach Farm and Little Lost Creek State Forest near Pendleton. NRCS Soil Scientists judge the pits. The students identify properties of the soil, site characteristics and have to assess the suitability of the soil for ponds, basements, lagoons and sewage fields. The forestry portion of the contest is supervised by MDC Forestry office in Warrenton. Students identify different types of trees, know how to inventory for improving timberstand, identify different types of tools used in the timber industry and know how to figure board feet in tree for timber sales.

About 8-10 high schools participate in the contest with key chains given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place individual winners in each category and plaques given to team winners in each category.

This project is funded through the district's local funds and the 1/10th of 1% Parks and Soils Tax..
